Whilst our screening was rudely interrupted by hardware failure, I hope those that came got enough of a taste of this great film to pass comment on it. For all the clunky acting, loss of focus and inability to edit concisely, this is (I think) a great film. What do you think>

A bunch of reasons, young jedi. First of all - how many films from Senegal will we ever get to see? Not many - if any (ahem).

Second - despite the fact that our screening finished earlier than anticipated - I hope you could see that it is a great story, even if the crafting of that story is a little clunky by today's standards.

Finally - I love the fact that Sembene isn't playing favourites; everybody is guilty or responsible in some way - everybody is using everybody else, picking the bits of the various traditions (old and new, local and imported) to suit themselves.

That's what I think. Clearly you didn't think so.

I was enjoying it. Now comes the arduous task of tracking it down in order to see the rest...

I've ordered another copy of Xala through the library. When it arrives, we'll have a special screening to see the second half. I've also ordered Sembene's most recent film (Moolaadé (2004)), but this is a little less jolly, given its central concern (which I'll leave you to find).

Ok - king of ellipses: I'd love to see Persepolis. Thank you.
